WEB
SITES Increasingly, the world wide web is becoming the medium of choice for engineers and designers looking for information on products and services. As a result, a well-designed web site is a must for any company selling into the technology marketplace. However, there are some fundamental differences between how an engineer and your run-of-the-mill webhead surfs. For the most part, engineers scorn "flash". They are not interested in how sexy a site looks. They couldn't care less about animation, special effects, and colorful backgrounds. All these things take too much time to download and engineers despise lengthy downloads. They want data. Clear, relevant data. Informative charts and graphs help, but they want data and they want it fast. That's not to say your site shouldn't be good-looking. It should. Just don't let glamour get in the way of good, solid data. It also helps to enable an engineer to drill down quickly through your site. Like any good sales tool, a good web site removes as many roadblocks as possible between the viewer and the information he or she seeks. Enable them to go directly to product specs if they want. Have corporate background data available if they want to go back to check out your company once they've found the product or service they need; that's also a good idea for investors. And, of course, make sure your links work and there's no dead-ends or redundant pages. If you don't have a site, this is some good, basic advice to help you get started. If you already have a site, but it violates any of the above, it needs some revamping. Either way, we can help you. |
