The workhorse of any campaign, product releases are a cost-efficient means of promotion to a large number of publications. Because of the low cost associated with product releases, only a tiny number of leads are needed to offer an extremely effective return-on-investment.

As low-tech and unglamorous as product releases are, it is still amazing how often companies get them wrong. The most common mistakes are over-blown, self-congratulatory text that's long on superlatives and short on real, objective information. Many companies can't seem to refer to themselves without using such over-used terms as "industry leader" and their products are always "revolutionary". Editors, weary of wading through this self-serving, inflated hype, simply trash this type of release.

What editors really want is informed, objective, solid information that has real value to their readers. Often this requires looking at your products with a critical eye: How does it compare with the competition? What does it offer to compel someone to buy it? Most important, what "pain" does it cure?
